General growing guide

General Growing Guide

Welcome to the general care guide for cacti and succulents. These resilient plants can thrive for decades with the right care — and we’re here to help you get it right from the start. This guide covers the basics, but remember: different plants have different needs. Always take cues from your individual plants, and if in doubt, reach out — we're happy to help.

Light

Light is absolutely key. These are not indoor plants — they need to be outside. Most will do well with strong, direct light, but not all. Some plants will look and grow better with partial shade or softer light, especially in extreme heat or when newly potted. Scorching can leave them looking a little rough, but they'll survive. Adjusting exposure based on individual needs and local conditions is the best approach.

Water

Water generously during active growth and flowering — usually spring through autumn. Weekly or even twice weekly watering can be appropriate in hot weather, provided conditions allow for fast drying. Always ensure pots have excellent drainage.

Feeding

You might think these plants need lots of fertiliser — but that’s not the case. A general purpose soluble fertiliser in spring and autumn is plenty. You can also apply a seaweed tonic like Seasol a couple of times during the growing season for a boost to overall health. Just remember, that’s a tonic, not a substitute. Think of it like how people use vitamins.

Seasonal Care

Most of our plants slow right down in winter — some go completely dormant.

If you're in a cold area, you may not need to water at all for 2–3 months. Not a drop. In milder climates, occasional light watering might be fine. It's all about adjusting to your conditions.

Everything we sell is safe in cold weather as long as they are kept perfectly dry and somewhat sheltered. Our greenhouses aren’t heated — cold isn’t the issue. Cold and wet, though? That’s a death sentence for many species.

Keep a close eye on your plants, and always err on the side of dry when in doubt.
